American History: Do we have African American leaders like Booker T Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois today?

Lately, in the news, several stories have depicted the African American community as leaderless. Many African American leaders today face criticism from the African American community for "selling out." Leaders like Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, Bill Cosby and Condi Rice, often face condemnation from the African American community for their views. This is a very important subject, yet it is one that is often ignored because it is potentially volatile. Do you see an emergence of a new group of African American leaders in the United States that will set a new tone for race relations in our country in the 21st century? Is your view of race and civil rights one of optimism for the future, or fear that we might return to the tribulations of the past?

i think that obama is a good leader for the african american commmunity. he shows a caring side, does not show much hostility, i think he is a leader not inly for the african american community but also for the white part. i dont think we will go back to our old ways. i think the south is the only reason for our set backs in racial equality. if we all could learn that we are equal and be done with it, but i still think it will be a while. definately not tomorrow.

I think that the african american community needs to step it up and show american what they are all about. Rice is a strong leader and she is a female which is also a good thing. African americans need to have a strong government leader who will stand up for what they believe in and not just fold to money and bribes in the issues they realy should defend. I think that we are not going to go back to what we had before now or go forward. i think that we are just going to stay the same and not make progress or setbacks untill someone can set up a plan as to what needs to be done

I think that we do have African-American leaders in today's society. Some may not be as influencial as others, but yes, we do have them. These advocates to the African-American society ensure that we are treated as equals and have the same opportunities that Whites have.

The African American's unofficial leader is Oprah. You'd be surprised at the amount of influence that she has on our society. Every year around Christmas time, she comes out with this hottest gifts list. Any item on this list's sales go up immediately. People will spend money on a product simply because Oprah Winfrey thinks it's cool or a good gift. Her influence has a large effect on our society.
