American History: What is the problem with Laissez-Faire?

We did a lot of talking about Laissez-Faire and Social Darwinism. When taken at face value both of these philosophies look harmless, however, we have seen that they led to some real upheaval in American history. So what do you think were the underlying problems with Laissez-Faire and Social Darwinism?
